Azerbaijan Hazelnut Exporters Consortium has developed a common strategy for local hazelnut exporters.

The purpose of the Consortium is to promote an increase in exports of hazelnuts by Azerbaijani enterprises.

AHEC is the Azerbaijan consortium of 5 exporters of hazelnut manufacturing plants with more than 200 employees. AHEC LLC has been working as a hazelnut manufacturing and export company for 19 years.

Our some certified plants are situated in strategically main hazelnut cultivation regions such as Zagatala and Khachmaz. Besides crop from our own hazelnut orchards, our company control and manage the hazelnut supply chain by the purchase of hazelnuts from local 12000 farmers.

Company’s annual volume of the shelled hazelnut is 5000 tons.

Country

Azerbaijan has all the necessary weather and climatic conditions for the cultivation and production of hazelnuts.

Azerbaijan’s hazelnut orchards are situated in the foothills of the Caucasus Mountains in the country’s regions of Qakh, Zaqatala, and Balakan. The total production volume of hazelnuts in 2013 was 31,202 metric tons. The number of orchards and hectares of production increases annually by an average of 4-5%.

At present, Azerbaijan is among the world’s top five hazelnut producing countries (along with Turkey, Georgia, Italy, and the United States).

According to the International Nut and Dried Fruit Council, Azerbaijan makes up 4% of world hazelnut production.

Azerbaijan produces the following varieties of hazelnuts: Atababa, Ashrafli, Ghalib, Ganja, Sachagly, Topgara and Yagly.

The most popular varieties are Atababa and Khachmaz.

Organize and carry out activities to promote Azerbaijani hazelnuts in international markets.

Assist Consortium members to identify potential trading partners interested in purchasing Azerbaijani hazelnuts.

Facilitate improved competitiveness of hazelnuts for export, including certification in accordance with international standards.

Develop and disseminate promotional and informational materials on the export potential of Azerbaijan hazelnuts.

Ata-baba variety is familiar for the nut-growing areas of north-western Azerbaijan,

where it comprises 80% of all hazelnut production.

Ata-Baba

Ata-baba is a 1.0-4.2 meter bush. From 3-6 nuts grow together, sometimes by 1-2, the husk is twice the length of the nut, which has a flat-rounded shape.

The weight of a nut kernel is approximately 2.5 g. The yield is about 42%, while oil content averages 68.22%.

The nuts ripen in September. In Zaqatala, some 11-year-old bushes produce 25 kg of nuts. Ata-baba variety is ubiquitous in nut-growing areas of western Azerbaijan, where it comprises 90% of all hazelnut production.

Khachmaz

Khachmaz variety has vigorous bushes, 2-5 meters tall.

The nuts are in bunches of 3-4 pieces, with an open husk. The length of the nut is about 1.6 cm. The shell is thin. Kernel yield is 57.5%, oil content averages 69.4%.
